The Tranzit Group
The Tranzit Group is New Zealand’s largest family-owned transport and tourism company operating throughout Aotearoa, New Zealand. For almost 100 years, it has held the reputation of being pioneers and innovators in the bus and coach industry and has no intention of stopping.
Tranzit Group is behind some of New Zealand’s most well-known brands including Tranzit Coachlines, Tranzit Tours, Tranzit Intercity, Pacific Tourways (Auckland) Ltd, Cross Country Rentals, Tranzurban, Rite Price Rentals, Maugers, Bus Travel NZ Ltd and Luxury Airport Shuttles.
Tranzit Group is also a 50% shareholder of Entrada Travel Group incorporating GreatSights, Gray Line, AwesomeNZ, Greyhound Australia, Tranzit InterCity, Tusa Dive and Divers Den in Australia.
Tranzit Group also oversees Group Governance and Strategy, is focused on investing in assets, and has a strong Shared Services team that partners with all business units located throughout Aotearoa, New Zealand and owns a fleet of more than 2,000 vehicles, 12 workshops, 15 depots and electric bus charging infrastructure that currently totals 4,200kw – enough to power the town of Foxton.
Our Environmental promise
We are committed to decarbonising our bus fleet and investing in charging infrastructure to support our growing fleet of electric buses.
After introducing the first battery powered electric bus into New Zealand in 2018 and the first electric bus into regional New Zealand in 2021, we now operate more than 40 double deck electric buses for Metlink in Wellington, have partnered with Horizons Regional Council to introduce New Zealand’s first 100% fully electric bus fleet in Manawatū and will soon be introducing more electric buses into Waikato and Auckland. This will help New Zealand meet its goal of reducing emissions from land transport and improving air quality in the cities and regions we live and operate in.
Our history
Tranzit’s long and proud history dates back to 1925 when Albert Snelgrove established the Grey Bus Service in Wairarapa, named so, because grey paint was the only colour you could buy at the time. After changing to the Royal Blue Bus Service five years later and then the Blue Bus Service in 1947, it was in 1980 when the third-generation brothers Paul and Keven Snelgrove brought the company from their father.
Since that time, The Tranzit Group has grown and expanded to be where it is today – operating multiple brands across multiple sectors including tourism, public transport, Ministry of Education (MOE) school bus and SESTA (Special Education Service Transport) services, event and charters, car rentals and electric buses. The company has always thought outside the box when it comes to future proofing the business and over the last 10 years has done this through an environmental lens – transitioning its fleet to zero emissions to help New Zealand’s transport sector meet its decarbonisation goals.
Our clients
Some of Tranzit’s key clients include Greater Wellington Regional Council, Horizons Regional Council, Taranaki Regional Council, Waikato Regional Council, Auckland Transport, the Ministry of Education, New Zealand Rugby Union, the New Zealand Defence Force as well as major event organisers, such as WOMAD and Toast Martinborough.
“In the cities we operate in, we want to ensure people can travel on clean, quiet and zero-emissions buses, so we are investing heavily in electric buses and charging infrastructure to support the journey.”
James Howard, Project Manager Tranzit Group
